Florida Football Worst Coaches: Doug Dickey

  • Head coach from 1970-1978
  • 58-43-2 Record

In Tennessee, Doug Dickey is revered as a legend that led the Volunteers to an SEC title in 1969 and late went on the be the athletic director from 1986 until 2003.

As a Florida Gator, Doug Dickey still holds the title for the most losses of any head coach in program history.

Now you could counter that and say he also has the fourth-most wins of any head coach.

The end result is that of all the head coaches Florida has had since 1960 that coached at least three seasons, Dickey has the third-worst winning percentage.

He ranks behind Muschamp because, in nine seasons at the helm, the highest Florida ever finished was 15th. Seven of his eight seasons in Gainseville ended with the Gators being unranked.

And considering what he had accomplished in Knoxville prior to coming to Gainesville, including the 1967 season that saw Tennessee finish second in the country, his time with Florida was a massive disappointment.
