Florida football: Should the Gators go for Casey Thompson in the transfer portal?

Florida football has a couple of questions in the quarterback room as we approach the 2023 season. Billy Napier even hinted at the possibility of the Gators adding another guy into the QB room before the fall.

The transfer portal may have given Florida their next QB target.

Nebraska QB Casey Thompson entered the transfer portal this morning, and this could be the guy that the Gators have been waiting on.

After committing to Texas in the class of 2018, he transferred to the Cornhuskers before the start of last season and finds himself looking for his third school to finish out his college career.

He had the best year of his career in his junior year at Texas, throwing for 2,113 yards with a 63.2% completion rate, a 24:9 TD-to-INT ratio, and a 154.7 passer rating.

Last year with Nebraska some of his numbers took a slight hit, throwing for 2,407 yards with a 63.1% completion rate, a 16:10 TD-to-INT ratio, and a 150.1 passer rating.

It’s hard to blame him for not succeeding as much in Nebraska’s offense. It’s Nebraska.

Thompson has a lot of upside in his game. He’s got a very strong arm and the athleticism to extend any play that starts off with trouble.

Casey, if he decided to be a Gator, would be the most talented guy in the room from the moment he stepped on campus. He has the best arm between him, Mertz, and Miller, as well as being the most athletic and the most capable to extend plays

His skillset would also allow the Gators to run an effective RPO with Thompson and the talented backfield that Florida has.

It’s expected that a couple of high-profile schools will be in on Thompsom given his talent. Billy Napier will have his work cut out for him if he wants to land Casey, but it just may be worth the effort.
