Florida Football NFL Draft bust No. 2: Steve Spurrier
1967 Draft, Round 1, Pick 3
San Francisco 49ers, 1967-1975
Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 1976
Everyone loves Steve Spurrier. He is the icon for Florida football and the foundation that Gator fans will always reflect upon. He won the Heisman trophy in 1966 and returned to Gainesville as the head coach in 1990.
In between, Spurrier was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers as the third overall pick in the 1967 draft.
The NFL was a bit different in 1967 and the 49ers drafted Spurrier with the intention that he would be the starter four years down the road.
That road never arrived, as Suprrier only started 38 games over ten years in the NFL. When he was on the field, he only managed a career completion percentage of 51.9% and threw 40 touchdowns against 60 interceptions.
He finished with a career QB rating of 60.1.
In his last season in the NFL, Spurrier played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1976 and was 0-12 as the starter.
