Florida basketball: Should the Gators go after Caleb Love in the transfer portal?
By Will Thomas
Florida basketball is after multiple notable targets in the transfer portal such as Walter Clayton Jr., EJ Jarvis, and BJ Mack.
But a new addition to the transfer portal this afternoon could be an interesting prospect for Golden and his staff to go after.
North Carolina guard Caleb Love announced that he was entering the transfer portal this afternoon, and it will be interesting to see if the Gators decide to go after him.
Florida basketball: A risk worth taking?
We all remember what Caleb Love did two years ago with the Tar Heels during his sophomore season. UNC beat Duke on the road in Coach K’s final home game, then went on a tear in the postseason before losing in the national title game to Kansas.
That year, Love scored 15.9 points per game, threw out 3.6 assists, and was an efficient shooter going 36% from deep and 86.3% from the line.
For whatever reason though, Love took a big step back this season. He actually scored more, with 16.7 points per game, but his shooting went down considerably. He was only 29.9% from long range and 76.5% from the stripe.
So we have to ask ourselves, why did that happen?
UNC as a whole took a huge step back from their last season. From playing in the championship to missing the tournament and just looking sluggish all season long.
So was it Love? Or was the whole program dysfunctional?
If you asked me, I think Golden needs to give him a call. Sure, his shot selection can be questionable at times, but Golden didn’t seem to mind too much when Kowacie Reeves kept hoisting up threes to no avail.
Given the state of the team, Love’s upside is worth it to the Gators. His floor is poor shooting that can stall your offense, but he showed that he’s still very good at getting to the rim and either scoring or drawing fouls.
Caleb’s offense is something that the Gators need, and they can’t afford to just let him go somewhere else without trying to get him in the orange and blue.
Keep up with Florida basketball at Hail Florida Hail.
