We here at Hail Florida Hail try to keep up with current trends surrounding Florida Gators football. We are admittedly not insiders and instead rely on piecing together all the puzzle pieces that get leaked to put together a cohesive narrative.

So, when looking at Google Trends, and seeing Phil McGeoghan was trending as a related query with Florida Gators football, it led us to do some digging.

While there doesn’t seem to be any official reporting that is linking McGeoghan to Gainesville to fill the vacant wide receiver coach position, it does lead us to wonder what his background is and if there is some hidden smoke.

Florida Gators Football: Where there is smoke…

As a player, McGeoghan graduated from Maine and spent three years in the NFL with Denver and New Orleans. He returned to Maine in 2007 as a wide receiver coach and then moved on to USF from 2009 to 2011. His unit in 2011 had close to 3,000 yards receiving.

From there, he bounced back and forth between the NFL and college. He has previous stints with the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, and Los Angeles Chargers, as well as East Carolina and his most recent stint at Colorado.

When Deion Sanders came to town, McGeoghan was not retained.

So why might McGeoghan be a name floated to Florida when we have chronicled other exciting names like Jeff Scott or Ike Hilliard?

For one, he’s available. While Hilliard and Scott are also available, Spring practice has started and the number of experienced and available coaches out there that could fill Napier’s vacancy and not seem out of place is a small list.

Two, he has spent six years coaching in the Sunshine State even though he was born and raised in the New England area.

He may not be the flashiest name Florida Gators football could add, but if there is fire to the Google smoke, McGeoghan would be a worthwhile addition.
