For three years, Rashad Torrence was a solid presence on the back end of the Florida football defense that was never afraid to jump in a make a tackle. He was after all the leading tackler for the Florida Gators in 2022. But at times Torrence also struggled with pass-coverage assignments and was a touch undersized compared to other safeties.

Torrence could have stayed in Gainesville for another year to help solidify his draft stock, while also bringing some semblance of stability to Florida, but after three years in The Swamp, he has opted to try his luck in the NFL.

With safeties and corners going today at the NFL Combine, Torrence is one of those guys that needs a big day to prove he belongs at the next level.

Florida Football: Follow your dreams

Torrence had 84 tackles with 50 of them being solo. Given Patrick Toney’s scheme, he was asked to play a more conservative role in 2022. He had three interceptions in 2021 and five pass breakups in 2021 compared to no interceptions and just one pass breakup in 2022.

At 6’0″, 200 pounds, Torrence is a bit undersized when compared to guys like Derwin James, but he matches the size of someone like Budda Baker.

Torrence projects out as a potential Day 3 draft pick, which can be a scary place to be for an NFL hopeful. A good day at the Combine today and Torrence could sneak into someone’s Day 2 draft board. A bad day at the Combine today and Torrence could fall off draft boards altogether.

And thus, the gamble Rashad Torrence has made on himself will have its first inflection point today. He will of course have his Pro Day and even if he has a disaster today, someone will pick him up as an undrafted free agent.

But a good day today can go a long way to prove that Torrence is good at gambling.
