Florida Football: Chauncey Bowens will bring legit track speed to Gators
A lot of guys in high school claim to have “track speed.” They will run in one or two races in a tri-meet against some garbage schools, win their heat, and claim they are fast. The beauty of track and field though is that the watch doesn’t lie and recently 2024 Florida football commit Chauncey Bowens opened his track season with a time that showcases he has legit track speed.
Florida Football: High-speed locomotive
Bowens is a running back out of The Benjamin School in North Palm Beach. Listed at 5-11, 219 pounds according to 247 Sports, he is built more like a linebacker than he is like a running back.
He is a lower rated four star recruit that committed to Florida football back in September, but we here at Hail Florida Hail feel he could start to move up the rankings after throwing down a time in the 100 meter dash an athlete of his size should not be throwing down.
Last season in the state of Florida, only 117 guys ran 10.88 or faster by the end of the season in May. Bowens set a PR with his 10.88, and it is only February.
While this week was the opening week for track and field in Florida, Bowens is currently ranked 15th in the entire state for the 100, the 8th fastest non-senior, and the top ranked athlete in the 100 meter dash for class 1A.
Again, this is not some slender 160 pound scat back moving down the track. This is a guy weighing 219 pounds.
Bowens joins a growing list of potential diamonds in the rough that Billy Napier is finding for Florida football. We have chronicled before how Eugene Wilson shot up the rankings and became a top-10 wide receiver after committing to the Florida Gators. The same goes for fellow receiver Andy Jean.
Because while Bowens may not have the star rating right now, ask yourself who is going to want to try and tackle him?
