Injuries are a way of life when one plays high level sports, and the members of the Florida Gators have not been immune to getting hurt. Last night star center Colin Castleton broke his hand during Florida’s win over Ole Miss, effectively ending his career with the Gators.

Castleton joins a list of Florida Gators that have had their seasons derailed by injury, sometimes in gruesome fashion. We are going to take a look at some of the more notable incidents from recent memory.

Florida Gators: The Polar Bear breaks his foot

Coming off a season where they finished ranked 24th in the national rankings, the Florida Gators baseball team had high hopes heading into 2015 given that the 2014 squad didn’t have a single senior on the roster.

Those hopes were almost derailed out of the gate when Peter Alonso, then a sophomore, broke his foot right before the season started. Alonso only hit .264 his freshman year but hit .354 that summer during 59 games in the Northwoods League.

The Gators were able to hold the fort with Alonso and when the Polar Bear did return he hit .301 in 39 games played. Florida made it to the final four of the College World Series in 2015 before being eliminated by Virginia.

Alonso has done alright for himself since and is a mainstay in the New York Mets organization.
