Florida football: DJ Lagway is a great player, and may be a better recruiter

Florida football is already putting together an elite 2024 recruiting class. 247 Sports has the class currently ranked 10th in the country, and it features two top-30 players in Myles Graham (LB) and the headliner DJ Lagway, a five-star quarterback out of Texas.

For as good as a player that he is, Lagway may be an even better recruiter. Ever since he made his commitment to the Gators official, he has been all over Twitter recruiting guys who drop their offer list or top 5-10 schools.

He’s also been taking advantage of big visit weekends to campus, as he acts like another coach trying to get the visiting recruits to commit.

Back in January, DJ “had a really long conversation with (Billy Napier). He wanted to talk some recruiting with me and tell me some guys he wants me to go hard after. We got Adarius Hayes that day.”

That was during Florida’s junior day event the weekend of January 28th. Hayes is the 61st-ranked player in the 2024 class and the 7th-best edge rusher.

At this point, Lagway doesn’t come to campus to see the school and get to know the coaches. He’s there on a mission.

“I was recruiting guys, man. That was the biggest thing for me about the visit and why I wanted to get down there. I wanted to recruit those top guys that are on the list and on the board that were there with me. Building relationships with guys and chopping it up with them…I am going to be there a couple times in the spring…I am going to be at the spring game too.”

Just about everybody can agree that QB is the most important position on a football team. Having an elite arm committed early on during the recruiting cycle is huge for the Gators’ class.

Other high-level recruits want to play with elite guys and seeing that UF already has top-tier talent committed can be appealing to them.

Lagway is going to continue to recruit until he gets every last guy he wants. I like the odds that he can regain Jerrick Gibson’s commitment to the Gators. Playing with his arm will also attract some big-time receivers.

Lagway’s willingness to go out and work hard recruiting other guys shows how bought in he is to the program. Not many guys will go out and help the coaches recruit to the level that DJ is doing it.

Don’t be surprised when the Gators pull in a few more elite recruits thanks to Lagway’s recruiting.
