Florida Gators News: Sunday roundup of tennis and women’s basketball
The Florida Gators had three squads in action yesterday, with women’s tennis, men’s tennis and women’s basketball all taking their respective courts to compete.
It wasn’t the greatest day for Florida, with those three teams going 1-2 with women’s tennis emerging as the lone victor.
Florida Gators women’s tennis defeats Baylor
Florida traveled to Waco to take on the Baylor Bears and emerged with one of its most convincing wins of the season. Baylor is currently receiving votes for the top 25 poll and the Florida Gators still dispatched of them 6-1.
Rachel Gailisn and Bente Spee teamed up to win their doubles match 6-3 and Emma Shelton and Sophie Williams secured the doubles point after winning 6-4.
Once in the singles portion of the match, Florida won 11 out of the 14 sets contested, with Sara Dahlstrom winning 6-0, 6-0, Alicia Dudeney winning 7-5, 6-3, Rachel Gailis winning 6-4, 6-4, and Emily De Oliveira winning 6-1, 6-0.
Anastasia Sysoeva had to go to a third set tiebreaker but won that 10-3.
The squad will now take a couple weeks off before playing Pepperdine on February 24.
Women’s basketball falls
A rough second quarter and a disastrous fourth quarter left the Florida Gators women’s basketball on the losing end of a 68-42 scoreline against Ole Miss on the road.
Trailing 14-11 after the first quarter, Florida was outscored 19-11 in the second quarter to go into halftime trailing 33-22. Things were still respectable after the third, but Ole Miss outscored Florida 25-11 in the fourth quarter.
The Gators were doomed after shooting 13 of 53 from the field, a 24.1% conversion rate. KK Deans led Florida with 10 points while Kirsten Deans had 10 rebounds.
Florida will take on Mississippi State on Thursday.
Men’s Tennis finishes winless
Unfortunately the 15th ranked Gators fell 4-1 to the 16th ranked Cardinal.
Much like against Southern Cal, Florida won the doubles point with Tanapatt Nirundorn and Togan Tokac winning 6-2 and Jonah Braswell and Lukas Greif winning 6-4. From there, the singles portion of the match did not go well as the Gators failed to take a single set from Stanford.
Florida’s men will next take the court on February 17th for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
