Florida Gators News: Another new commitment via portal, Rashada drama
The Florida Gators have been busy in the transfer portal as they try and replace several departing players to replenish the roster for 2023. Over the weekend the Gators had multiple recruits on campus from the portal and Deuce Spurlock from Michigan committed on Sunday.
Florida missed out on edge rusher Gilber Edmond from South Carolina, who announced he was committing to FSU but did pick up another offensive lineman.
Micah Mazzccua from Baylor is 6-5, 331 pounds and pledge his commitment to the Florida Gators. His announcement, along with Caden Jones committing to Florida on Saturday, gives the Gators two more offensive linemen for the 2023 season.
Florida Gators: Jaden Rashada drama
It’s no secret that NIL deals around the country haven’t always been the smoothest. Florida has tried to streamline its NIL deals with the Gator Collective, but the results have been underwhelming at times.
This brings us to incoming QB Jaden Rashada and the news that he has yet to show up on campus in Gainesville despite being an early enrollee. Rashada, who is from California, was in Orlando for the Under Armour All-America Game and on paper the plan was for him to go from Orlando and head on over to Gainesville.
Details on the situation are vague, though they seem to be pointing towards a hang-up with his NIL deal.
Rashada’s whole odyssey to commit to Florida has been centered around a NIL deal. Over the summer, it looked like he was a shoo-in for the Florida Gators before he magically committed to Miami. During the season he flipped back to Florida and signed his LOI on early signing day.
We’ll hold off on final judgment until everything plays out, but the last high-profile commit Florida had from California, Chris Steele, never actually played a down in Gainesville.

Speaking of NIL, the Gators have picked up a Director of NIL Strategy. Ben Chase is a Florida alum and gained a social media following this past college football season as he made it to 77 different games throughout the 2022 season, including the national championship.
As noted above, Florida’s NIL approach has been lacking at times, so Mr. Chase has an important task ahead of him.
