Florida football: Marco Wilson’s two INTs remind UF fans of what could’ve been

Yesterday, Florida football fans saw a familiar face make some big-time plays on Sunday Night Football.

Former Gator Marco Wilson picked off Tom Brady twice last night. Yes, the same Marco Wilson that thought an LSU cleat was a boomerang and got surprised when all that came back was a 15-yard penalty.

During Marco’s career, it was clear he had the talent necessary to be an elite corner at the college level. Unfortunately for him, he had to play through one of the worst defensive coordinators in UF history, Todd Grantham.

It’s also worth noting he had big shoes to fill from his older brother Quincy, who was a lockdown corner before Marco made his way to Gainesville.

But still, after his performance last night, Gator fans are just left to imagine what the 2020 season could have been like with Wilson playing at a high level.

ESPN recently released the “Best teams to not make the College Football Playoff”, and the 2020 Gators were #2 on the list, only behind 2017 Auburn.

It’s hard to argue that those Gators were one of the best teams that season. They just got dragged down by terrible defense.

The offense of Kyle Trask, Kyle Pitts, and Kadarius Toney is ridiculous on its own, without including guys like Trevon Grimes and Nay’Quan Wright before his injury.

All that team was missing from making a run was a competent defense. They couldn’t get it.

The most famous photo from both of UF’s losses that season feature Marco Wilson. At Texas A&M, he got mossed by an Aggie wide out (who we later found out had a torn ACL during that game), on a deep shot that kept A&M in the game.

And we’re all familiar with the shoe toss photo through the fog.

While Marco didn’t have a lot of help on the defensive side of the ball, if those photos didn’t exist, there’s a good chance the Gators are undefeated going into the SEC Championship, and likely getting in regardless of the outcome in Atlanta.

Keep up with Florida football at Hail Florida Hail.
