Florida Football: The Choke at Doak

It’s remarkable to go back to the 90s and early 2000s and look at how incredible the UF vs FSU rivalry was. This game was just one of those legendary installments between the two top-ten rivals.

The #4 Gators took the trip up to Tallahassee to take on the #7 Seminoles. Steve Spurrier was looking for his first win up in Tallahassee, and for a while, things couldn’t have been going any better.

Danny Wuerffel and the Gator offense were cruising, and the Florida defense wasn’t letting the Semis do anything.

UF was up 24-3 at halftime and opened up the second half with a defensive stop and another touchdown drive, making it 31-3 with a few minutes left in the third quarter.

Everyone knows the rest of the story.

Even though the game is in the record books as a tie, it’s a little hard to escape the feeling that the Gators lost this game. Being up by 28 and losing always hurts. It stings a little extra when it’s at your biggest rival.
