The Las Vegas Bowl was a disaster for Florida football, there is no other way no sugarcoat it. But it was a disaster one could see coming and it should not be seen as a reflection of what the Florida Gators will look like in 2023.

Anthony Richardson, Ventrell Miller, O’Cyrus Torrence, and others all sat out and the Gators have reinforcements coming next year in recruiting. One would also assume more are coming via the transfer portal and it was evident the need for a QB is at the top of the list.

Florida Football: Better call McCall

When we last checked in on Coastal Carolina QB Grayson McCall, he has just entered the transfer portal and Florida football was given the top betting odds to land the QB. He would be a great fill-in for the 2023 season while Jaden Rashada and DJ Lagway develop and would give the Gators instant credibility at the position.

Several Gators had their chance to step up on Saturday and cement starting roles for themselves heading into 2023, but few did. The biggest name who was given a chance to shine was Jack Miller.

He did not.

Miller Time wasn’t a complete flop given the cast he had to work with. The Gators were also hampered by a lackluster run game and penalties that made one think Dan Mullen was back in charge.

But at 13 of 24 passing for 180 yards and no TDs, combined with minimal rushing yards, it wasn’t enough to ease the need for a transfer portal QB. Miller just never seemed comfortable and was late on several throws including what should have been a pick-six on the first drive for Florida football.

It is possible that Miller still could be an SEC level QB if given a full offseason to develop. The problem is that three years into his college journey there has yet to be a sign that he is ready. All he has to go on is the fact that he is a former four-star recruit.

After failing to win the starting job at Ohio State twice (granted he lost out to Justin Fields and CJ Stroud) and having a dud performance in the Florida Spring Game, it will not bring Florida football fans much confidence if the Gators whiff in the portal and Miller is the chosen one heading into 2023.

McCall recently cancelled a planned visit to Auburn and all insider reports seem to have him favored for Gainesville.

Let’s hope that is the case.

Keep up with all things Florida football with Hail Florida Hail.
