Billy Napier and Florida football got some great news on the recruiting trail this afternoon, as they may have found their QB of the future.

Today, 5-star QB DJ Lagway announced his commitment to come play for the Florida Gators.

247 Sports Composite rankings has Lagway ranked as the 4th best QB in the class of 2024, and the 24th-best player in the nation.

Gabe Brooks of 247 Sports compared Lagway to Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker. He has a great arm and “rips the ball in those portions of the field and drives it to the perimeter”, as well as being a “dynamic running threat, whether improvisationally or by design.”

If Lagway can live up to Brooks’ expectations of Hendon Hooker, the Gators will be in good hands. Florida had to learn firsthand what Hooker could do this season, and they would love to have Lagway come in and do the same thing.

DJ also plays basketball and baseball, rounding him out as an athlete. Despite rumors that Lagway may no longer want to play baseball in college, it’s likely that Florida’s great baseball program helped draw DJ in.

So how does Lagway fit in with the Gators?

It’s important to remember he doesn’t get to campus until the fall of 2024. That’s still a long way away. If everything goes to plan for Florida, DJ will get to campus when Jaden Rashada is slinging the rock around for the Gators and will have a year or two to develop.

He has the potential to be the best all-around QB in Gainesville since Tim Tebow. He has a great arm like Kyle Trask and can move like Anthony Richardson. Barring any changes, Lagway can be a big piece in the rebuilding of the Florida football program.

His commitment may also start a domino effect on the trail, so don’t expect Napier to fall asleep in the recruiting game.

Keep up with Florida football at Hail Florida Hail.
