Twitter can be a weird and toxic place. Many members of Florida football are active on Twitter and it can be a means for athletes to control their own narrative. Sometimes, however, athletes tweet things that might mean nothing, and at the same time could mean everything.

That was the case on Thursday when Gators’ safety Kamari Wilson tweeted out something that could potentially be a clue for Billy Napier’s depth chart heading into Georgia next week.

Florida Football: We’ve been waiting for you

The safety position for the Florida Gators has been a sore spot this season. Trey Dean has been the entrenched starter and his play has left a lot to be desired for a veteran of the team like himself. Dean kept flexing on USF, even though it was after a first down, and followed that up by not knowing his coverage assignments against Tennessee.

LSU was another montage of bad technique and not understanding his assignments and it seemed like Billy Napier and Patrick Toney might finally be having enough.

Waiting in the wings is the four-star, top-50 prospect from the class of 2022, Kamari Wilson.

Wilson had his first start against Eastern Washington after Dean was out with a “lower-body injury.” He played decent but made some mistakes that could be expected from a true freshman. After the continued poor play by Dean, Wilson saw an increase in snaps against LSU.

It’s hard to say that Wilson has played “better” than Dean, but he definitely hasn’t played worse. And that’s a problem when comparing a true freshman to a 5th year senior.

And on Twitter on Thursday, Wilson let his feeling known about whose time it is in Gainesville.

This tweet could mean multiple things. Maybe Napier told Wilson he would be starting against Georgia. Maybe Wilson is sending his own cryptic message to Napier. Maybe Wilson is just a big Call of Duty fan and he’s excited for the bye week because it’s his time to play Modern Warfare.

If Napier ran Florida football like we would with a Gators’ dynasty on NCAA 23, playing Wilson over Dean at this point wouldn’t even be a complicated decision. Florida isn’t winning anything meaningful this year and Wilson is the future of the program, so it’s best to let him develop as much as he can.

It is slightly harder in real life telling a senior he is being benched for a freshman.

That doesn’t mean Napier shouldn’t do it and if he wants to send a strong message to the entire program that it doesn’t matter who you are, the best player is going to play, he needs to start Wilson against Georgia.

Playing Wilson won’t fix all of Florida’s problems on defense overnight, but it would at least be a start.
