Florida Football: Six plays that could have flipped Gators season
It’s been an up-and-down season for Florida football. After starting on such a high note after beating Utah, the next six games have been met with frustration. The margins for this season have been razor-thin and unfortunately, much like last season, Florida is finding itself on the wrong side of these margins one too many times.
In all three losses this season, the alteration of a single play could/would have made the difference between losing and winning. In that same vein, however, one flipped play in three of Florida’s four wins could have resulted in defeat.
For Florida football to get to where it wants to be, it either needs to:
- Get to a place where it isn’t relying on coin flips to win
- Be like Tennessee this year and win all the coin flips
But since the Gators aren’t there yet, here is one play from every game (except Eastern Washington) that decided the outcome of the game.
Florida Football: Amari Burney seals it vs Utah
For all the remaining plays on our list, there will be a butterfly effect where we can’t 100% ensure the game would have been flipped. Against Utah however, there is little doubt that Florida football would have lost had Cam Rising thrown a touchdown in the dying seconds of the game while the Gators were clinging to a three-point lead.
Rising fired the ball into the endzone but Amari Burney read the play perfectly and jumped the route to the tight end to come up with the interception and seal the game.
A touchdown here and Florida loses. But even if it’s just an incomplete pass, Utah was in position to kick a field goal and send the game to overtime against a Gators’ defense that could not stop Utah in the second half.
