Billy Napier has done a great job with recruiting thus far for Florida football. Last week the Gators picked up two more commitments and Florida is now ranked 8th in recruiting. However, the class of 2023 did take a small step backward when one of Napier’s earliest commitments opted to take his talents elsewhere.

Florida Football: All in the family

Creed Whittemore is a top 200 prospect out of Gainesville and is the brother of current Florida Gators receiver Trent Whittemore. As a high school prospect, Creed is a much higher-rated prospect than his brother. He is ranked in the top 200 according to 247 Sports and while he plays QB, Napier and the staff have wanted Whittemore to play WR like his brother. Creed has solid track speed, clocking 10.85 seconds in the 100-meter dash (good for 94th in all of Florida last season).

Creed took to Twitter on Sunday to announce that he was decommitting from Florida football and later in the day he announced that he would be committing to Mississippi State instead. If one is to believe some of the rumblings about why Creed opted to leave his hometown to head to Starkville, Trent has seen minimal action this season and isn’t thrilled about it.

The truth for Trent is that he does a lot of things correctly and is a solid possession receiver, but the arrival of Ricky Pearsall took away the need for him in this offense. Florida runs the pass more than it throws it anyway and Trent is the fourth receiver in an offense that uses three. Should Trent look to transfer in the offseason it wouldn’t be too unexpected.

The good news for Florida is that Creed Whittemore’s decommitment didn’t impact the Gators ranking in recruiting. Most sites still have Florida ranked eighth and Florida football have three talented receivers still committed for this class:

  • Andy Jean
  • Eugene Wilson
  • Aiden Mizell
