Florida football: Marco Wilson should have backed down

We’ll blame the lack of crowd in 2020 for the season Florida didn’t quite feel the Petty Power a season later. Even though Florida lost the fourth quarter against South Carolina and Missouri, the Gators were still marching towards a potential playoff appearance.

Then Marco Wilson threw a shoe.

Even with wins over South Carolina and Missouri, Florida lost the fourth quarter in those games 7-0 and 10-7 respectively. The Gators did win the fourth against Arkansas 21-14 and Kentucky 3-0.

Then Marco Wilson threw a shoe.

It should be noted that even without the shoe throw Florida had already blown a fourth-quarter lead. Also lost in the lore of Marco Wilson was the field goal attempt that Evan McPherson had to tie the game at the end.

It went wide and all we remember is Marco Wilson throwing a shoe.

Florida football was outscored post-Petty 41-34 in 2020.
