The Florida Gators moved Saturday’s contest against Eastern Washington back one day to Sunday out of caution for Hurricane Ian. During his press conference talking about the upcoming matchup against Florida football, Eastern Washington coach Aaron Best revealed he has zero clue how hurricane forecasting works.

Florida football: Stand back, a hurricane is coming

Predictions are tough for a lot of professions. We here at Hail Florida Hail for example have managed to go 5-3 on our gambling predictions regarding Florida football, but we have been far from perfect even though we study the Gators extensively.

Coach Best was asked if he would watch the weather channel to check the status of Hurricane Ian and decided to take a shot at meteorologists by saying a lot of things and at the same time saything at all.

"“With what I’ve heard, with all the meteorologists in the world, I’ve watch a few of the local channels, not everything you hear is true. What you see is not always true either. What I have been told, I don’t know whether to believe it or not, those things can do some different things. So one hour it’s this way, one hour it’s the next.”"

Ah yes, the classic line of “I’ve been told” after just telling us not everything you hear is true.

Now he’s not wrong in the sense that predicting the precise path of a hurricane is very difficult. Hurricane Ian was predicted at one point to make landfall near Tallahassee and now it’s making a beeline to southwest Florida.

But if Coach Best had bothered to do any research instead of just being told by someone else, those same meteorologists said over a week ago before Ian has even formed that there was a strong possibility of a hurricane sitting in the Gulf of Mexico with eyes on Florida.

And if he bothered to do any research instead of just being told by someone else he would know that’s the entire reason the “Cone of uncertainty” exists.

I get it though, predictions are hard for Coach Best. Like predicting if his players are going to tackle anyone. Maybe Billy Napier can give some tips this week.
