Florida Football: How Billy Napier’s discipline is impacting Florida already
By Devin Long
With the Gators season quickly approaching, many fans are looking forward to the opening matchup vs the #7 ranked Utah Utes. I can assure you the players and coaches, especially Billy Napier, are looking forward to it as well, after what took place this past weekend.
Along with the Gators getting their new training facility, the Heavener Center, they also had a productive scrimmage on Saturday as well. Florida CB Trey Dean and WR Trent Whittemore both said positive things about the scrimmage, including multiple complements towards Coach Napier.
Most notably, it seemed that the physicality picked up, as well as the team gaining confidence for the season. Overall, if you’re a Gator fan, you have to be pleased with what you’re hearing so far. There seems to be a combination of belief and trust amongst the players, which is a great combination for winning games.
Difference between Dan Mullen and Billy Napier when it comes to discipline
Even though the season hasn’t started yet, you can already tell the difference between this year, and last year.
With Dan Mullen, It seemed his go-to line was that the Gators weren’t “evaluating” anything.
Coach Napier is approaching all situations the right way and making sure his players agree as well. Notable players, including Trey Dean III, believe in Coach Napier by saying, “Great coaching equals great results.” As Florida fans, you have to love that.
Gators scrimmage details
Although the comments above suggest perfection in the scrimmage, there were still some things the Gators need to fix before week 1.
Defensively, the Gators outdid the offense on Saturday. This was in part due to the kind of self inflicted wounds that Mullen never seemed to address while Napier is working hard to fix them.
The offense had some trouble taking care of the ball, and scoring in the red zone. Coach Napier alluded to these issues saying, “The quarterback play wasn’t where we want it to be,” and “It can be better.”
Should this be a concern for Florida fans? Probably not. With Coach Napier’s hard work and determination, the offensive issues will be fixed by week 1. As for the defense, it has to make Florida fans happy to hear positive things coming from that side of the ball.
