Multiple Florida Gators Heading To World Championships In Track And Field
"After dominating the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships a couple weeks ago, several members of the Florida Gators track and field program were back in Eugene, Oregon for the USATF Outdoor Championships over the weekend. The meet included professionals as well as collegiate athletes and served as the qualifying meet for the World Championships that will also be in Eugene in three weeks."
Jasmine Moore Makes History
Undefeated this season at championship meets in the long jump and triple jump, Moore continued her historic season by becoming the first American woman to qualify for both events at the same World Championship meet.
In the long jump, Moore jumped 6.80 meters (22 feet 3 inches) on her first attempt of finals and even after scratching her final four jumps it was enough to finish second to qualify for Worlds.
Moore came back on Saturday to also qualify in the triple jump. Her mark of 14.06 meters (46 feet 1 inch) on her first jump would have been enough to get her through, but she would improve to 14.15 meters (46 feet 5 inches) to secure her third place finish.
Dominance In The 400
Perhaps Florida needs to change its name to 400 Meter U after two more Gators qualified for Worlds in the event.
After winning the NCAA National Title in the event, Talitha Diggs added a USATF National Title to her trophy case. Sitting in 4th halfway though the race, Diggs poured it on over the last 100 meters to win the event with a time of 50.22.
Champion Allison will also be heading back to Eugene for Worlds after adding his name to the all time leader board in the 400. Allison finished in second after running a 43.70. That time is the 10th fastest ever run in the world, the third fastest ever for an NCAA athlete, and bettered his own school record.
Alumni Also Going To World Championships
Multiple former Florida Gators will also be back in Eugene for the World Championships.
Cory McGee finished second in the women’s 1500 to qualify. McGee was in 6th after the first lap, worked her way to fourth after two, and used a closing 300 meter sprint of 45.12 to finish in 4:04.52.
Javelin thrower Avione Allgood-Whetstone finished third in the women’s event with a throw of 59.26 meters (194 feet 5 inches). She is short however of the required qualifying standard of 64 meters to compete at the World Championships.
Triple jumper Will Claye put up a mark of 16.93 meters (55 feet 6 inches) on his third jump during finals to finish in second place and qualify for Worlds.
In the 110 meter hurdles, Grant Holloway had the top seed heading into finals. Having already secured an automatic spot into the World Championships, Holloway opted not to run in the finals.
NCAA Heptathlon champion Anna Hall will also be competing at Worlds, having pre qualified for the event in a meet back in May.
100 meter dash champion Joseph Fahnbulleh will be at the World Championships as well representing Liberia.
