Friday brought good news for Gator basketball, as St. Bonaventure transfer Kyle Lofton announced that he’d be coming to Gainesville for his final year of college ball.

Lofton will bring lots of experience to the Gators, and will pair very well with Trey Bonham in the backcourt. While Lofton isn’t going to shoot the lights out, his ability to handle the ball and limit turnovers will elevate the UF offense.

Lofton averaged 12.8 points, 5.2 assists, and 3.6 rebounds during his last season with the Bonnies. He also swiped 2 steals per game, and limited his turnovers to just under 2.5. With an assist to turnover ratio of 2.2, he’ll always keep the Gators running efficiently.

Like I said before, Kyle isn’t going to wear the net out with his jump shot. He has career shooting percentages of 42.1%, and 30.3% from three point range. He is a great free throw shooter however, sitting at 82% for his career.

What Lofton lacks in shooting he makes up for in finishing. He makes driving to the rim and laying it in look so effortless, even when there’s a defender in his face.

The Gators won’t suffer from an inconsistent jump shot from Lofton at all. He fits into this team perfectly, as he gets to facilitate an offense full of talented scorers. Guys like Trey Bonham, Will Richard, and Kowacie Reeves can handle the 3 point line, which will give space for Lofton to dribble inside and play down low with Colin Castleton.

Lofton really is a perfect scheme fit for Todd Golden and the Gators, who have quietly put together a great class in this year’s portal. This may be the first year in quite some time that UF has had a pair of great guards in the backcourt together, and UF fans should be excited to see what they can do.

Keep up with Gator hoops here.
