Updated Gators basketball transfer portal targets

As if college coaches didn’t already have enough work to do during the offseason, the transfer portal has added a new element to recruiting and is a key tool for coaches to fill holes on their roster.

Since I wrote this article covering some potential targets for Todd Golden and the Gators, there have been some changes to their wishlist of portal players.

The good news is that UF landed Alex Fudge, an LSU transfer, and was able to retain Kowacie Reeves, who entered his name in the portal last Thursday but withdrew it over the weekend. Fudge gives the Gators another body down in the paint and will be a good depth piece behind Castleton. Reeves will be a focal point of the team and could be a star in the making for UF.

Holding on to Reeves and adding Fudge was a good start for Golden, but he’s looking to make some more noise in the coming weeks.

Backcourt Target Updates

After the addition of Alex Fudge, Golden will likely look to address the backcourt next in the portal. He’s already managed to land Will Richard, a transfer from Belmont, and is in play for Terry Roberts, a guard from Bradley who already has a visit to Gainesville under his belt.

Unfortunately, the Gators lost out on the Kario Oquendo sweepstakes, as the standout guard announced he would be staying in Athens to play for UGA.

A new name in the mix however is VMI transfer, Trey Bonham. The sophomore from Mobile, Alabama scored 13.6 points, grabbed 4.4 rebounds, and had 4 assists a game. More impressive than just those numbers is that he scored double digits in VMI’s final 16 games of the season.

Bonham would be a great addition for Golden and the Gators. He has a good amount of playing experience to lead a team at a high level and has shown that he’s more than just a scorer.

UF is also still in play for SMU transfer Kendric Davis, although the list of schools interested in him is long, and he’s visited Memphis and has a planned trip to Texas Tech.

Frontcourt Target Updates

As stated before, Alex Fudge’s commitment gives the Gators some much-needed depth down low and will prove to be a big get out of the portal when the season rolls around.

One guy the Gators missed out on was Noah Carter, a transfer from Northern Iowa, who decided to go to SEC foe Missouri instead. Adding Fudge makes Carter’s decision much easier to accept for UF, and they are moving forward with some more targets as the offseason continues.

One of those new targets is Morehead State transfer, Johni Broome. Broome is originally from Plant City, Florida, so he’s familiar with the state and could feel at home in Gainesville. He was a monster for the Eagles last year, averaging a double-double with 16.8 points and 10.5 rebounds a game.

Broome is taking a visit to Gainesville this upcoming weekend, and Golden and his staff are going to have to work hard to beat out Auburn, the other potential suitor for Broome’s talents.
