Florida Football: 3 things to watch for in the Spring game
Position to watch #1: Quarterbacks
It all starts with the Quarterbacks. For the most part, all teams have proved that if you don’t have an elite QB, then it is extremely difficult to win a national championship. Thursday night, all eyes will be on #15 Anthony Richardson, and rightfully so. Richardson quickly became a fan favorite early on in the 2021 season when he was breaking long runs with top-end speed, hurdling over defenders, and making those ‘wow’ throws against USF and FAU. Although there were struggles against arguably the #1 defense in the country in Georgia and the injury concerns, fans are ready to see what AR-15 can do with a full season of starting under his belt.
With this being a brand new coaching staff we shouldn’t expect a ton from the Quarterbacks early on since they all have to learn a completely new scheme. But a few things I would like to see, primarily from Richardson, is decisiveness, ball security, and explosive playmaking. All of those things will be extremely crucial to the outcome of the 2022 season and if he does those things well, the sky is the limit for the Gators.
Besides Richardson, this QB room has turned out quite well. The Gators added former Ohio st. QB Jack Miller via the transfer portal which will definitely turn out to be a crucial pickup as Richardson does have some injury concerns. Other QBs in Carlos Del Rio-Wilson and Jalen Kitna will also provide quality depth at the position. What you will want to see from the backups in this game are limiting turnovers, accuracy, and being able to read the defense. If we see all of what is mentioned above, then I will be very optimistic for this coming season.
Projected QB depth chart:
- Anthony Richardson – RS So.
- Jack Miller – RS So.
- Carlos Del Rio-Wilson – RS Fr.
- Jalen Kitna – RS Fr.
