Florida Gators make splash in transfer portal
By TJ Ostrander
The Florida Gatorswent from having an abundant of high caliber quarterbacks to a sudden shortage in a matter of a few weeks. Emory Jones announced his plans of transferring from the Florida football program after the upcoming Gasparilla Bowl and the Gators lost 4-star commit Nick Evers to Oklahoma less than a week before signing day.
Billy Napier dug into the transfer portal to provide a big addition to his Gator football team. Former Ohio State quarterback Jack Miller has announced his intention to transfer to Florida.
Miller is a former 4-star quarterback recruit from the 2020 class. He redshirted his Freshman year (played in one game)and appeared in 4 games in 2021 for the Buckeyes.
Many are wondering why Miller chose Florida. Isn’t Anthony Richardson poised to have a breakout season as the starter in 2022? He is, for now, but injuries have been a problem for Richardson during this season and I’m sure that has been a concern for Billy Napier.
The move from Ohio State from Miller is surely because of a lack of playtime. With OSU’s 2021 starting quarterback, CJ Stroud, playing so well this season Miller must feel he may never get a chance to get on the field. Miller could have transferred to a middle of the road program and been the guaranteed starter for several teams, however he has chosen to go to Florida. I think this says that he has been told he will have a chance to compete with Anthony Richardson for the starting job. It also says that Jack believes that he can win the job.
With all the quarterback controversy put aside, this is another great sign for Billy Napier. Pulling in a former 4-star to replace Emory Jones is a good look. It is probably discouraging for Carlos Del Rio and Jalen Kitna, it would be interesting to see what their future holds. It seems like at least one of them may be hitting the portal in the next 365 days.
