Florida Gators potential portal help
By TJ Ostrander
It’s that time of year where a flurry of players announce their intentions to enter the transfer portal and take their talents to other schools. A slew of players announced they were leaving the Florida Gators after the firing of former head coach Dan Mullen.
Wide receiver Jacob Copeland entered the transfer portal last week and leaves an immediate hole in the Gator receiving core. Florida really need to add some pass catchers for the 2022 season as the production through the air from the 2020 season really fell off in 2021. The Gators thought they had a 4-star recruit locked up in Jayden Gibson as he committed a few months ago. However, Gibson had a change of heart after meeting Billy Napier and ended up signing with Oklahoma a few days ago.
Let’s take a look at three potential targets who have entered the portal so far. Unfortunately some of the bigger targets have already been secured by other programs.
Cam Johnson WR-Vanderbilt 2018-2021-6’0 198 lbs
Cam is a former 4-star recruit who has played the last four seasons in Nashville at Vanderbilt. Despite Vanderbilt’s abysmal play on the field the last few years, Johnson has put together some decent seasons. Johnson is not a deep threat he has averaged just 9.9 yards a catch in his career, but has made 124 receptions. One of the reasons I have Johnson on this list is for his 2020 season. He appeared in just 9 games but hauled in 56 passes for the year, an average of 7 catches a game. Copeland led the Gators in catches in 2021 with just 39.
Most likely Johnson would not be a game changer for the Florida Gators, but he can add a few key plays when they need to pick up a few yards on a key third-down.
Joshua Moore WR-Texas 2018-2021- 6’1 162 lbs
Joshua Moore is another high school 4-star recruit in the transfer portal. Texas flat out stunk in 2021 so I’m not going to put too much fault on Moore for his numbers dropping in 2021. In 2020 Moore caught 9 touchdowns from quarterback Sam Ehlinger. He also averaged an impressive 15.7 yards per catch and showed that he can make some big plays with a quality quarterback at the helm. Anthony Richardson might be able to utilize Moore in 2022.
Miles Marshall WR-Indiana 2019-2021- 6’4 212 lbs
I’m going with Miles Marshall here mainly based on his size. He’s big and it never hurts to have some size. He also has spent the past three seasons playing in the Big Ten so he has some game experience. Marshall caught 22 balls in 2021 for an average of 14.1 yards but did not score on the year. I told you it was slim pickings.
There is still some time for the Florida Gators to reel in a recruit before the last signing day for the 2022 recruiting class.
