Billy Napier has his signature signing of the 2022 recruiting class. 5-star defensive back Kamari Wilson shocked the college football world Wednesday when he signed with the Florida Gators. Most recruiting experts had Georgia as the leader for Wilson.

Wilson recently had an official visit to Florida last week and it must have still been fresh in his mind, as he joined forces with Gator’s head coach Billy Napier. Wilson is 5-star recruit and ranked 28th overall in the 2022 recruiting class. This must be a huge bode of confidence for Billy Napier as he stole a top recruit out from under Kirby Smart. Georgia had the nation’s top defense all season long, a defense that absolutely dominated the Gators back in October.

Wilson has been described as an extremely physical safety who can hold his own in coverage as well. He does well getting forward to help in stopping the run and can also get into the backfield for a blitz. He fits the build of what Napier has been saying he wants to build in Florida, a physical football team. A player like this could likely see playing time in his freshman year on campus in the Gators secondary.

The Gators lost several key commits on the offensive side of the ball since the firing of Dan Mullen, something that Napier has been criticized for in his first few weeks. So far it has been an excellent day on adding talent in the secondary for Napier. It doesn’t seem like much help is coming on the offensive side of the ball via recruiting, Napier may need to lean on the transfer portal to add some offensive playmakers for the Gators.

Congratulation to Billy, a huge get for him. This is a huge step in the right direction, the fans want to see 5-star recruits and Billy delivers one early into his tenure. Let’s hope he can build the defense back to the level they were at in the mid 2010’s.
