Julian Humphrey will be the next elite Florida Gators cornerback
By Jeremy Klump
Regardless of where the Florida Gators are currently ranked and where they will end the recruiting year ranked, just know this: The Gators and head coach Dan Mullen have been bringing in elite talent. One name that highlights their great recruiting efforts is 2022 cornerback commit Julian Humphrey.
Humphrey announced his early commitment on May 27 via Twitter.
His commitment was well received by the Gators fans, with many of them welcoming Humphrey to “DBU.”
The Gators have a long history of producing NFL talent at the cornerback position. Most recently, Marco Wilson was selected in the 4th round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Current Gators cornerback Kaiir Elam will likely be a top 10 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, adding his name to the list of Gators cornerbacks taken in the draft. Alongside Elam is the best freshman cornerback in the nation, Jason Marshall Jr.
Julian Humphrey will be the next cornerback to shine at DBU.
After Elam likely leaves early for the 2022 NFL Draft, Marshall will be one of the starters at cornerback. The Gators will have an open spot, but my money would be on Humphrey making the same impact Marshall will make this season.
Humphrey is rated as a four-star recruit by 247 Sports, though even Humphrey is asking to be considered as a five-star.
His play on the field is incredible, but Humphrey may have cemented a five-star rating for himself when he ran an official 4.38 40-yard dash at The Opening (via Gerry Hamilton of ESPN).
Humphrey won the fastest man award there, and this should have Gators fans pumped up.
Mullen has a need for speed this recruiting season, and I can’t help but feel like the Gators are getting back to their old, winning ways. The Gators are getting great players that have elite speed, and that’s significant for one reason.
You can’t coach speed, but the Gators coaches are great at coaching players and getting the most out of them. I mean that players like Humphrey will be the fastest on the field, and Florida will help progress them to have to skills to be the most talented.
That’s a sign of good things to come, and Humphrey is a big part of that. Outside of being incredibly fast, Humphrey already plays the position with great technique.
His high school film is a coach’s dream to watch, as he does the little things right each and every play. Humphrey is sticky in man coverage, but he isn’t just a cover guy.
Humphrey isn’t afraid to help in the run game either and get dirty. He is a willing and able tackler, so he is a perfect fit for the Gators.
It may be a year away, but trust me; Humphrey is a name Gators fans will be talking about for a long time. If this kid can keep progressing, he will be playing on Sundays after dominating in Gainesville.
