As we get closer to the 2021 NFL Draft, scouts and analysts finalize their draft boards and rankings. One position that will always have a difference in opinion is cornerback. Former NFL Quarterback and current NFL analyst Chris Simms ranked his top 6 (I do not know why it was not his top 5, but oh well) cornerbacks, and there was a surprising name on the list. Former Florida Gators cornerback Marco Wilson was ranked No. 6 in Simms’ list.

Gators fans will never forget Wilson for his lapse of judgment against LSU in the 2020 season. Wilson’s cleat throw will be a moment that goes down in Gators history as one of the worst penalties ever committed by a player from Florida. However, the cleat throw may be what most Gators fans remember about Wilson, but he brought a lot more to Florida than that one bad moment.

Wilson started cornerback as a true freshman for the Gators and played in 32 total games for Florida. Wilson ended his Gators career with three interceptions and 17 pass deflections. He added 99 total tackles and two and a half tackles for a loss.

Simms’ entire top 6 cornerback list looked like this:

It was the first time I have seen anyone even mention Wilson as one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL Draft. Simms went as far to say that Wilson has first-round talent, which is just a bizarre statement. I have had Wilson pegged as a late-round prospect. However, Simms’ had him in his top 6, so it poses the question, “Is Wilson a top 6 cornerback in the 2021 NFL Draft?

I would say no, and I will follow up by saying Simms’ list is garbage. If you have been following recent draft coverage, Simms has been in the news a lot with some scolding hot takes. After his top 6 cornerback list, it’s clear that Simms is trying to cause controversy instead of giving a genuine take.

Former South Carolina cornerback Jaycee Horn is one of the top cornerbacks in the 2021 NFL Draft. His film is fantastic, and his pro day solidified his stock as a first-round pick, in my opinion. Simms doesn’t even have him in his top 6, and even though I love the Gators, there is no way I can tell you with a straight face that Wilson is better than Horn.

Horn also thought Simms’ list was garbage and quote tweeted it saying, “Click bait,” which almost has 10,000 likes.

I wish Wilson well, and I hope that he can find a home in the NFL and have a solid career. However, I’m afraid I have to disagree with his ranking as a top 6 cornerback in the 2021 NFL Draft.
