Florida football: Is Todd Grantham in line for a head coaching job?
We haven’t even started the season yet, and already there’s talk that a Florida football could be a head coach.
It’s hard to consider the Florida football coaching team being broken up for any reason.
However, there are some who think that Gators’ defensive coordinator Todd Grantham could be in line for a head coaching job after this next season.
And, I can’t say that I disagree.
First, and foremost, Grantham will be helping to lead one of the best teams in the nation next season (if, and when that season starts).
So, if Florida football performs like we all know they will, he will certainly be on the interview list of teams who don’t.
Not Grantham’s first ride
It certainly wouldn’t be Grantham’s first spin in the old coaching carousel.
He was under serious consideration for the head coaching job at his former employer, Mississippi State before the Bulldogs settled with Mike Leach.
Although not confirmed, it is likely he was contacted about Mississippi’s head coaching job before Lane Kiffin got the nod.
But, in both circumstances, he decided to stick with Dan Mullen and Florida football.
Grantham has the chops
Don’t forget, Grantham has been in the big time before, spending nearly 10 years in the National Football League — most recently with the Dallas Cowboys.
But since then, his focus has been on college.
He left the Cowboys to work with Mark Richt has his defensive coordinator at the University of Georgia before heading to Louisville to coach under Bobby Petrino.
He finally landed with Mullen at Mississippi State and now with Florida football.
So, the experience factor is certainly there.
Where could he go?
It’s hard to say what programs will be searching for coaches next season.
One obvious standout is Virginia Tech — Grantham’s alma mater.
Justin Fuente has done ok in Blacksburg, but it certainly hasn’t been the ride that most Hokie fans expected.
Plus, if another season rolls around where in-state rival Virginia takes Fuente behind the woodshed, you can expect a change could happen.
However, that doesn’t mean that Grantham would leave. Remember, especially in college football, nothing is ever certain.
To put it mildly, Grantham is a fired-up kind of a coach. He’s very emotional on the sidelines and that could be a little too much to handle for some programs — especially ones who aren’t used to it.
That said, I would expect Grantham to get some serious interest once the 2020 college football season is over. But, I’m not too sure he would actually leave Gainesville.
