Florida football: Feleipe Franks to look at a Gator foe
A former Florida football quarterback is on the move and his next destination could be a Southeastern Conference rival.
There was plenty of excitement around the news that former Florida football quarterback Feleipe Franks was looking Kansas or Washington State as landing spots.
Today, however, the news is that Franks is possibly eyeing a rival of the Gators as a landing spot.
HawgSports.com reports that Franks is planning a visit to Arkansas.
Franks would be eligible to play immediately next season for whomever he decides to play. He announced his departure from Florida football on Dec. 1.
It could be known as late as Friday where Franks intends to play as the last day to enroll and go through the spring semester is Friday. If he wants to participate in spring drills, he has to decide by the end of the week.
He could wait and elect to join a program after, but his ability to step in as a starter would be hampered somewhat if he did.
The Razorbacks recently hired Sam Pittman, the former associate head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs, as its head coach.
Pittman has been an offensive line coach at Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas, North Carolina, Kansas and Missouri.
As for Franks, he has been out of commission since an ankle injury against Kentucky in the third game of the 2019 season. Prior to that, he started for Florida football in 2018 and threw for 2,457 yards and 24 touchdowns with a 58.4% completion rate.
In the first three games of this season, Franks had 698 yards passing with five touchdowns and three interceptions.
His injury gave way for redshirt junior Kyle Trask to assume the quarterback duties. Trask led Florida football to a Capital One Orange Bowl victory over Virginia on Dec. 30 in Miami.
To date, it’s been confirmed that Franks has only visited Kansas and head coach Les Miles. Miles originally recruited Franks out of Wakulla High School in Crawfordsville, Florida. He was also linked to land at Washington State before Mike Leach took the head coaching job at Mississippi State.
Presently, Arkansas has three scholarship quarterbacks on its roster — Jack Lindsey, John Stephen Jones and KJ Jefferson. They are also a possible landing spot for Houston quarterback D’Eriq King, who started ahead of Trask in high school.
The bright side of the story is, if Franks chooses Arkansas, Florida football would not see him as the Razorbacks are not on the Gators 2020 schedule. It would not be until the SEC Championship game they could possibly play against Franks.
