Florida football: It’s good that Kyle Trask plans to return to Gators
Oh my, will the quarterback talk start to ramp up in about two months as Florida football plans to have itself a bit of competition next season.
While the Florida football season isn’t over yet, talk of what the team will look like next season is already taking shape.
Especially following Monday’s discussion with Gators’ quarterback Kyle Trask.
You see, earlier in the day, head coach Dan Mullen talked to the 29 different NFL-eligible players on the roster. So, naturally, when reporters caught wind of who was in the room, it was natural to ask the question.
That question was aimed at quarterback Kyle Trask, who was asked about his future with the program next season.
"“I mean, I still have a whole ‘nother year here, so I don’t plan on leaving,” Trask said, as quoted by 247Sports. “But it’s great seeing how just being informed, I’m glad coach Mullen does that, just to let us know how it works.”"
The intent of Mullen’s meeting was to talk to all the players on the roster who are draft-eligible and understand how the draft process works. It’s also a way to find out just who might be interested in jumping ship for the dollar signs of the National Football League.
While that’s all fine and good, the conversation Monday went from who may leave for the NFL Draft to what kind of competition Florida football will have for a quarterback next season.
We’ll address that later.
But, let’s set the scene.
You all know that starting quarterback Feleipe Franks was knocked out for the season with a dislocated ankle against Kentucky earlier this season.
Trask came in and been an ample replacement, coming a game away from leading the Gators to another 10-win season.
Well, Franks likely has no interest in leaving and Trask just said he was coming back.
Oh, and let’s not forget about true freshman phenom Emory Jones who has also find himself in the game plans this season. It’s likely he’s coming back because he’ll just be a sophomore while Trask and Franks will be seniors.
Honestly, I can’t think of anything better for the program than to have Trask back and challenging for the starting role. All three quarterbacks have the ability to start and having this kind of depth at quarterback coming back is a problem a lot of college coaches wish they had.
Out of the top 20 quarterbacks for Florida football, Trask ranks 17th in passing yardage (2,455 yards) according to Sports Reference. His 66.6% completion rate is the best among all of those quarterbacks — including Tim Tebow and Chris Leak.
Keep in mind, those stats are not even over a complete season.
Franks will return next year as the 12th-highest-rated passer in Florida history by yardage (4,593) with a completion percentage of 59%.
I’m not going to discuss who I think should start — that will come at a later time.
But, for now, it’s good to hear a workhorse with Florida football in his heart will be back next season.
Remember, No. 8 Florida will host Florida State at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
