Florida football: Finally, some good injury news for the Gators
The injury bug has not been kind to Florida football this season. The Gators lost Feleipe Franks and C.J. McWilliams for the season among others out here and there.
Well, it’s about time Florida football had some good news on the injury front.
It appears defensive linemen Jonathan Greenard and Jabari Zuniga will be back and ready to play in two weeks against Georgia.
Additionally, Florida football head coach Dan Mullen told SEC This Morning wide receiver Kadarius Toney will also be in the lineup and ready for the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party in Jacksonville.
Greenard was kept out of Florida’s win at South Carolina after suffering an ankle injury the week before against LSU.
Here’s Mullen’s take on Greenard from back in February:
Likewise, Zuniga was also out of the win at Columbia, fighting an ankle injury.
The loss of the defensive bookends was obvious as the Gators managed very little in the way of a pass rush against South Carolina freshman quarterback Ryan Hilinski.
Gamecock running back Tavien Feaster also wreaked havoc in the run game, going for 175 yards on 25 carries and a touchdown.
While Zuniga has been a pass rush force, Greenard has amassed 28 total tackles — including 12 solo — and a team=high four sacks. He is tied with Jeremiah Moon for the team-best in sacks with 6.5. The graduate transfer from Louisville also has an interception and three defended passes.
Zuniga, on the other hand, has four tackles for loss and three sacks to his credit.
Having them back for the game against No. 10 Georgia is a welcome sigh of relief for Florida football as they look to apply pressure on Bulldog quarterback Jake Fromm and running back D’Andre Swift — who has 752 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground so far this season.
Toney suffered a shoulder injury in the second game of the season against UT-Martin.
Despite his absence from the lineup, the Gators are third in the Southeastern Conference with 2,218 yards passing and 21 passing touchdowns.
Quarterback Kyle Trask has the third-highest quarterback rating of any quarterback in the conference (159.2) and all of that without one of the most dynamic offensive players in Toney.
Before suffering his injury, Toney had three catches for 72 yards and a touchdown.
Now, imagine what the passing game will be like with the likes of Kyle Pitts, Toney, Van Jefferson and Freddie Swain all healthy and ready to play?
Remember, No. 7 Florida football is off this weekend and will return to action next weekend against No. 10 Georgia in Jacksonville.
