Florida football: The offense moving strong
Sometimes you can play the best game you can, minimal turnovers, scoring points, getting yards and yet you lose. Florida football on Saturday, in a hostile SEC stadium, played one heck of a game against the LSU Tigers.
The Florida football offense was rolling on Saturday as they scored 28 points and looked as if they were ready to play SEC football.
Quarterback Play
Kyle Trask looked good on Saturday. He got off to what I felt was a shaky start. Then on their second drive, he stood in the pocket held his ground on a key third down, The defense was coming hard around the ends and all that was left was a pocket. He then hit his receiver square in the chest with the pass. The camera zooms in to him and you see the excitement and the belief in his face.
Trask went 23-for-39 for 310 yards and a touchdown. He also had one interception. The interception came as they were on a 12 play drive going in for the tieing score. But there was clearly holding on the wideout he was looking for and then as the pressure mounted he let one go when he should not have.
But without that, he played a great game. He showed the heart of a champion and he leads this team from start to finish. Emory Jones came into the game on several possessions during the game. He went 1-for-2 with a touchdown. That may be the craziest stat I have seen for a QB but effective.
What he did do was come into the game and help a running game that once again had it struggles. It is a change of pace that was needed and he did a great job when he was called upon. All-in-all the quarterback position was in good shape and looks good going forward.
Running game
Once again the running game was not what they would like but it was more effective than in recent weeks. So it did take a step forward. Lamical Perine had 17 carries for 65 yards and ran with passion. He was a workhorse and along with Jones, who had 36 yards, and Trask with 21 they ran a somewhat effective game.
Some might say it was not enough, but they had as good as game as they have had all year. The blocking from the line was not great, but again they were effective. They are a work in progress still and in the end, they are still in the race for the east title.
Receiving unit
Once again they did not disappoint, the receivers did all they could do. This week it was Kyle Pitts day, he was all over the field catching passes and causing havoc. He is becoming a force on the Florida football offense as the opposing defense seems to never have an answer for him.
He is way too big for a true corner, and way to fast for a linebacker to cover.
Pitts had 108 yards on 5 catches and seem to make play after play. He will play a pivotal role as the year goes on and Florida football goes for the SEC title. Van Jefferson also had a big game with 73 yards and two touchdowns.
Trevon Grimes had 30 yards and a touchdown and Periine also caught a juggling touchdown to chip in. Once again eight different receivers caught a pass. The receiving game is only getting betting, they are experienced and know what to do when they get the ball.
Florida football
The Gators may have lost the game but it was not due to the offense this week. They performed as well as they have all year and in most areas, they improved.
Pitts is becoming a weapon that teams will have to focus on. Trask is a real big-time QB that has what it takes to win and Jones will be the future.
The line still needs to improve and one can see they do their best. The receivers are some of the best in the country and the running game will only get better. The bottom line is they hold their destiny in their own hands and have a great opportunity to get to a title game.
What happens from there, well who knows, but there is nothing more we could ask for in a team. GO GATORS!
