Florida football: Florida’s offense vs Auburn’s defense
Each week we will look at the match-up between the Florida football offense and the defense of the opposing team. This week the Gators take on the Auburn Tigers.
The Florida offense was once again going full speed against Towson.
Kyle Trask had another great game as he went for 188 yards and Jones came in with respectful 74 yards. The Gators won going away 38-0.
The Tiger defense had a good game as they showed they can put the pressure on a QB in a win as well.
Florida football offense
Once again this week the Kyle Trask was on fire going 15 for 15 well into the third. He seemed to have control of the offense and made good reads for options. With that, one would expect that the receivers had a great day as well.
As is the case each week with this receiving group any one of them can lead the team in receiving. This week it was Tyrie Cleveland, he only had three catches, but for 59 yards, Trevon Grimes caught five for 55 yards. This week eight players caught passes with two over 20 yards and one at 19.
They will need to do this and much more this week against Auburn. It does look good for the Gators as the one part of the Tiger defense that looked vulnerable was the air attack.
Trask and those receivers have a chance to have a big game. The Tigers gave up 216 yards to MSU and 335 against Texas A&M.
It is the running game that has the Florida football offense not clicking on all cylinders. As Mullens stated on his advice at halftime;
"“I just challenged them on missed assignments,” he said. “That has got to improve. That has got to improve for us. The mental toughness of the offensive line in their preparation has got to improve as we move forward.”"
The Auburn defense is stout up front and they will be right there all game. It will be up to the line to show they have the power to make the running game effective.
They did have a few bright spots with a 31 yard run in the second by Pierce. This is the game the running attack must be present to win. Big game for the line and RB’s.
Auburn’s defense
This will be by far the best defense this year the Gators have faced. But one look at the upcoming schedule, it won’t be the last tough defense either.
They are a typical SEC defense, stong upfront, good corners, linebackers that can do it all. Auburn’s Noah Igbinoghene is a cornerback for the Tigers and he will have his hand full Saturday.
Noah’s advantage is he was once a highly recruited wide receiver.
He may know a little better where the guy might break or when he may make his cut. With a Florida receiving unit that can have any one of them be the main target for a given day, he will not be enough.
Roger McCreary mans the other side and is a very capable defensive back in his own right. They will be ready to play but we have so many weapons to throw out at them I give the advantage to the Florida wide receivers.
The Auburn defensive has a better-than-average front. With guys like Derrick Brown who had three tackles and two sacks last week, they can cause havoc. He will drive an offensive tackle nuts with his size and speed.
Then you have Jeremiah Dinson who is all over the field and K.J Britt, they will make the running game look really bad if the line is not in a zone.
If Florida uses that quickness of the defense against them, screens and quick passes to the outside.
And use the passing game to help the running game, they could handle the Auburn defense. The Tigers are a very good football team and it will take all that Florida football has in them to win.
The result
The Florida offense seems to be rolling pretty nice right now, and that is without much of a running game. they need to run the ball better and keep the pressure on them with the pass. What we saw from a Tiger defense over the last few weeks is one that gives up yards and yes you can score on them.
With Trask playing lights out and all the receivers doing what they do, the Gators should win this one in the Swamp. They go 6-0 and on to LSU!
No. 10 Florida football will host No. 7 Auburn at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville.
