Offensive play-calling
Let’s go back to the first game of the season when starting quarterback Feleipe Franks slung the ball into traffic on third down, forcing an interception.
Gator Nation threw up its collective hands in disgust wondering just what kind of play had been called — admittedly, the offensive coaches called the plays that resulted in turnovers, not Franks.
Well, how things have changed.
Now, Dan Mullen is giving new starting quarterback Kyle Trask very simple reads and short passes to bolster confidence, which it has.
Against Towson, Trask opened the game going 18-for-18 utilizing passes that were quick outs for 10 yards or so. And, you have to credit the Florida football receiving corps for recognizing the game plan, getting open and hanging on to the ball.
But, the offensive play calling has definitely improved, setting up the offense to succeed without taking unnecessary risks by lobbing the ball downfield in traffic.
Granted, it may have to change a bit because it isn’t likely Auburn is going to give the same courtesy that Kentucky, Tennessee and Towson gave.
