Saturday afternoon, the ninth-ranked Florida football team cruised to a 38-0 shoutout over the Towson Tigers in the Swamp.

Florida football needed to use this game as a tune-up, if you will, for the games that will really matter over the next 8 weeks.

Those upcoming games will determine the Gators’ fate in the College Football Playoffs, and if they truly are contenders in the Southeastern Conference to potentially dethrone the almighty Alabama dynasty.

Florida football quarterback Kyle Trask started off 18-for-18, which broke former quarterback Chris Leak’s previous record from 2006.

Trask would finish the game 18-for-20 with 188 passing yards, one passing and one rushing touchdowns.

Hot. 5 takeaways from the first half against Towson. light

A lot of Gator Nation believed it would be a 45-point blowout, so the 38-0 final was close enough. But, Florida football has a real task ahead.

Next week, No. 7 Auburn comes to the Swamp for the 3:30 p.m. SEC on CBS game of the week.

I predicted last week Florida football needed to have a great game to work out issues with the offensive line and running game. After Saturday, the running game got off a bit, but the offensive line still has work to be done.

The Florida football defensive unit still needs to learn to stop missing tackles for big gains.

Overall, I’m giving this weeks game ball to Trask who is looking like a pro quarterback under head coach Dan Mullen’s system.

Trask started the game hot and utilized just what the Towson defense gave him.

His early completion was thanks to the Tigers giving him the short pass, so as not to give up a big play. It showed respect to Trask’s arm and the Gators’ receivers, but it ended up costing Towson in the end.

Saturday’s game was the first of the year in which the Gators did not turn over the ball, which huge going forward.

Now, the Gators will face some of its toughest competition as three of their next four opponents are ranked in the top 10. But, if Trask can continue to build on his last two starts and the defense can lock it down, the Gators could do very good things in the next four weeks.
