He carries an all-too-familiar last name and, yes, he is related to that guy. Florida football will get a first-hand look at Towson quarterback Tom Flacco this weekend.

Florida football will be finding out just how good Tom Flacco really is.

The quarterback for No. 10-ranked Towson (FCS) is, in fact, related to Denver Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco.

You know, the Super Bowl XLVII champion quarterback? Yeah, that guy.

Tom Flacco transferred to Towson in 2018 after spending two seasons at Western Michigan and a season at Rutgers.

He’s now in his second season with the Tigers and has led them to an FCS national ranking this season.

Thus far, Tom Flacco is 77-for-134 for 1,092 yards, six touchdowns and one interception in four games. In last week’s 52-45 overtime loss to No. 18 Villanova, Flacco was 21-for-42 with 304 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Oh, he also had 110 net yards rushing.

His best performance this season was a 328-yard game on 21-for-36 passing in a 28-21 win over The Citadel in the season-opener.

He tacked on another 232 yards passing and 68 yards rushing when Towson dropped then-No. 7 Maine, 45-23 at Maine.

Look, I’m not saying Flacco is a world-beater.

He’s faced a lot of FCS defenses and, while he has done very well against them, it’s not like going up against Florida’s defense.

It’s a defense that allowed an average of just 287 yards per game — 193 of that in the passing game.

Flacco likes to spread the ball around in the air, but Florida has one of the best secondaries in the country and it does lead the nation in sacks with 20 this season. He did connect with eight different receivers in the loss to Villanova.

There is no question the defense will be tested against this team — it has all the makings of a potential trap game — remember Michigan-Appalachian State? But, the Gators have to come out prepared to face a quarterback with great vision and an ability to tuck the ball and run.

I’m guessing those are attributes his brother Joe would like to have back as the Broncos have limped to an 0-3 start this season.

No. 9 Florida will host Towson at 4 p.m. Saturday at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
