Stock up

The Florida defense

Jon Greenard and Jabari Zuniga are tops in the SEC in sacks. Greenard has four and Zuniga has 3 — Zuniga didn’t play against Tennessee.

Additionally, David Reese has 29 total tackles on the season — No. 5 in the conference, by the way.

However, despite those numbers, Florida’s defense is getting things done by being more of a unit rather than just one or two players.

Must Read. Florida defense showed up against Tennessee with power. light

The Gators have an SEC-leading seven interceptions, but Shawn Davis and Kaiir Elam only have two apiece. Marco Wilson, Trey Dean III, Amari Burney have the others, meaning the Gators’ secondary is covering the field nicely and defending the pass on both sides of the field.

All-in-all, the Gator defense has been called upon to bail out the offense on more than a few occasions and they have done so nicely. I look for that to become a bigger challenge as the season continues.

But, for now, the stock is up on the defense.

The Florida passing game

The Gators have had little problem throwing the ball around the field in its first four games.

Currently, Florida football is fourth in the conference in passing with 1,179 yards. They trail LSU (1,727), Alabama (1,485) and Texas A&M (1,213) in the category.

Before his season-ending ankle injury, Feleipe Franks had 698 yards in the air and is still in the top 10 in passing in the conference. However, I see Kyle Trask surpassing that mark — most likely Saturday against Towson.

Trask comes into the game Saturday with 459 yards passing and a passer rating of 153. Trask has completed nearly 72% of his passes, meaning he is not making silly decisions with the football.

I see the passing game stock continuing to rise for, at least another week, before the Gators are really tested against Auburn in two weeks.
