It was a bit of a busy weekend for Florida athletics. We have decided to introduce a new segment to Hail Florida Hail, called Gator Bits.

It was a good weekend for Florida athletics.

With today’s first installment of Gator Bits, we look at the non-football related sports at Florida — which are just as tasty, without all the calories that come from other university’s sports.

Some of the highlights today come from women’s soccer and volleyball.

Enjoy.

Volleyball closes Gator Invite with win

Darrielle King notched 15 kills and three blocks while Lauren Dooley added another 14 kills and four blocks to lead Florida volleyball to a 3-2 win over Long Beach State in the final game of the Gator Invitational Saturday.

The Gators opened the tournament Friday posting a 3-1 win over South Florida and a 3-0 win over James Madison.

Dooley was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Thayer Hall — who had 12 kills and a block against Long Beach State — and Holly Carlton — who added 11 kills and three blocks — were named to the All-Tournament team.

The Gators will host Florida State at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Exactech Arena at Stephen C. O’Connell Center before hosting the Gators Invitational — last weekend was the Gator (no “s”) Invitational — this weekend.
