Florida football: Kentucky names starting QB for Florida game
It’s never fun to watch a college football player go down with an injury. Kentucky has named their new starting quarterback heading into Saturday’s game with Florida football.
Florida football will face a quarterback that has just one solid year of college football experience Saturday.
The Kentucky Wildcats named Sawyer Smith as its quarterback Monday after previous starter Terry Wilson went down in the third quarter of the Wildcats’ 38-15 win over Eastern Michigan.
Wilson suffered a season-ending knee injury.
As for Smith, he is a quarterback the Gator defense could really sink their teeth into (yeah, I meant to do that).
He played six games in his freshman year at Troy, going 18-for-25 with 181 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
He took a redshirt year in his sophomore year and came back the following season to throw 1,669 yards on 144-for-229 with 14 touchdowns and six interceptions — including 320 yards and four touchdowns in Troy’s 42-32 win over Buffalo in the Dollar General Bowl.
And that was it.
He came to Kentucky as a graduate transfer this season and earned the backup spot behind Wilson.
It was a perfect situation for Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops as he needed someone who could back up Wilson.
Now, however, the situation has changed and Smith is thrust into a big home game against a Florida football team hungry to avenge last season’s loss.
He will face a Gators’ defense that has given up 177 yards per game passing and just 74 yards rushing. Florida has also dominated opposing offenses with 15 sacks — led by Jabari Zuniga’s three.
I’m not suggesting Smith isn’t a capable quarterback, but under the circumstances, it is precarious at best. Smith did go 5-for-9 for 76 yards and two touchdowns against Eastern Michigan.
Eastern Michigan’s defense isn’t Florida.
