Florida football: Week 1 opponents recap
By Nick Knudsen
Florida football had the weekend off, but the Gators did get a first look at their 2019 opponents. Knoxville and Tallahassee are reeling, Muschamp dropped a big one, and Auburn held serve for the conference on a day that featured some ugly SEC losses.
The Gators (1-0) enjoyed a bye week after a Week 0 victory over Miami and will host the UT-Martin Skyhawks at Ben-Hill Griffin Stadium this Saturday at 7:30 PM ET. Here is how each Florida football opponent fared this past weekend.
Miami (0-1), Bye
Much like the Gators, Miami rested on Labor Day weekend. The Canes travel to Chapel Hill this weekend to face North Carolina squad fresh off of an upset over South Carolina. Next game: at North Carolina
UT-Martin (1-0), W 42-0 vs Northwestern State
The Skyhawks rode four second-half touchdowns to a 42-20 win over Northwestern State. UT-Martin visits The Swamp this week for its first meeting with the Gators. According to the UF Communications Department, Florida is 25-1 against first-time opponents since 2000. Next game: at Florida
Kentucky (1-0), W 38-24 vs Toledo
The Cats looked sluggish at times in the first half but avoided becoming one of the Week 1 SEC casualties by outscoring the Rockets 24-10 in the second half. Next game: vs Eastern Michigan
Tennessee (0-1), L 30-38 vs Georgia State
Rocky Top wasted no time obliterating a relatively optimistic offseason by laying an egg against a school that did not field a football team until 2010. As if the loss to the Panthers wasn’t enough, long-time Volunteers fan, Greg Butcher, has announced that he will enter the fan transfer portal. Better late than never, Greg! Next game: vs BYU
Towson (1-0), W 28-21 at The Citadel
Towson QB Tom Flacco, the younger brother of ex-Baltimore Raven and current Denver Bronco Joe Flacco, threw for 328 yards and one touchdown leading the Tigers, the first of three-straight Tigers on Florida’s schedule, to an opening day victory. Next game: vs North Carolina Central
#10 Auburn (1-0), W 27-21 vs Oregon
Freshman QB Bo Nix led a last-second touchdown drive that sent the Ducks and the Pac-12 back to the West Coast with slim playoff hopes. SEC! SEC! SEC! Next game: vs Tulane
#6 LSU (1-0), W 55-3 vs Georgia Southern
The Tigers cruised behind QB Joe Burrow‘s 5 TD passes. Yes, you read that correctly. An LSU quarterback had 5 TD passes! LSU held the Eagles to only 98 yards of total offense. College GameDay will follow LSU to Austin in Week 2. Next game: at #9 Texas
South Carolina (0-1), L 20-24 vs North Carolina
Muschamp and the Cocks’ uphill battle through a brutal 2019 schedule just became significantly worse after dropping a winnable game in Mack Brown‘s debut. Next game: vs Charleston Southern
#3 Georgia (1-0) 30, Vanderbilt (0-1) 6
Athens invaded Nashville to watch the Dawgs take care of the Dores in the season’s first SEC matchup. Next game for Georgia: vs Murray State, Next game for Vandy: at Purdue
Missouri (0-1), L 31-37 at Wyoming
Mizzou QB Kelly Bryant posted some big numbers, but a Wyoming scoop and score on Bryant’s second-quarter fumble will be the highlight that is ultimately remembered from this Mountain West upset. Next game: vs West Virginia
Florida State (0-1), L 31-36 vs Boise State
The Noles were shut out after halftime despite streaking out to a 24-6 first-half lead. Willie Taggart’s second Seminoles squad yielded 621 total yards including 407 total passing yards to a true freshman. Next game: vs UL-Monroe
