A couple of teams have a game under their belt — like Florida football. There are others who open this weekend.
Week 0 didn’t provide too much in the way of surprises as Florida football knocked off Miami 24-20.
Now, the rest of the college football programs in Florida take to the field, providing us with more data for our weekly Florida college football power rankings.
Remember, these are only the Division I schools.
Here are your weekly Florida college football power rankings for week 1:
Florida Gators (1-0, 0-0 SEC)
Last time out: The No 8 Gators defeated Miami, 24-20 in Orlando.
Outlook: It certainly wasn’t a pretty win. Questionable decision-making on the field and on the sidelines need to be cleaned up. Fortunately, Florida football has a week off to work on what’s broken. This includes the offensive line that helps Lamical Perine to rush for under 50 yards. Yuck.
Next time out: The Gators will be at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium to host UT-Martin at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 7.
Central Florida Golden Knights (1-0, 0-0 American)
Last time out: No. 17 Central Florida spanked Florida A&M, 62-0 Thursday night.
Outlook: It’s Florida A&M, so you can’t get too excited about the win. Although quarterback Brandon Winbush was solid, going 12-for-23 for 168 yards and two touchdowns. Adrian Killins Jr. rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown against a virtually non-existent Rattlers’ defense. The Knights’ defense held Florida A&M to what amounts to 96 yards of total offense.
Next time out: The Knights will go on the road to take on Florida Atlantic at 7 p.m. Sept. 7.
Miami Hurricanes (0-1, 0-0 ACC)
Last time out: The Hurricanes dropped a 24-20 decision to No. 8 Florida football in Orlando.
Outlook: What can you say that hasn’t already been said? The Hurricanes had some bright spots — redshirt freshman quarterback Jarren Williams going 19-for-30 for 214 yards and a touchdown — and some not-so-bright spots — 14 penalties for 118 yards and several missed tackles. But, they can build on it and using the bye week this week to do it.
Next time out: Miami will open ACC play with a trip to face North Carolina at 8 p.m. Sept. 7.
Florida State Seminoles (0-0, 0-0 ACC)
Last time out: The Seminoles will open the season this weekend.
Outlook: One bright spot to Hurricane Dorian is Florida State gets a true home game as their season-opener with Boise State has been moved from Jacksonville to Tallahassee. Otherwise, all eyes will be on Willie Taggart and what system he decides to trot out against the Broncos.
Next time out: Florida State will take on Boise State in Tallahassee at 12 p.m. Aug. 31.
South Florida Bulls (0-1, 0-0 American)
Last time out: Even a lightning delay couldn’t stop Jonathan Taylor and Wisconsin from dismantling the Bulls, 49-0 on Friday.
Outlook: Taylor had 135 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries. Oh, he also added 48 yards and two touchdowns on two receptions at No. 19 Wisconsin asserted dominance over South Florida all game long. The good thing: It was one of the best running backs in the nation. The bad thing: That defense will still be very shaky in weeks to come.
Next time out: No rest for the weary as South Florida stays on the road to face Georgia Tech at 7 p.m. Sept. 7.
Florida International Panthers (0-1, 0-1 American)
Last time out: FIU was smashed, 42-14 at Tulane on Aug. 29.
Outlook: It was a game they kind of needed to win, especially on the road, and they didn’t get it. Despite James Morgan throwing for 208 yards on 19-for-34 passing, nothing else really went right for the Panthers. The loss exposed a lot of issues with the FIU defense — who gave up an astonishing 350 yards on the ground to the Green Wave.
Next time out: Florida International will return home to host Western Kentucky at 7 p.m., Sept. 7.
Florida Atlantic Owls (0-0, 0-0 C-USA)
Last time out: The Owls will have their season opener in Columbus, Ohio Saturday.
Outlook: Chris Robison is the go-to on offense as he returns following a season where he threw for 2,533 yards and 12 touchdowns for the Owls. However, Lane Kiffin needs to find a replacement for running back Devin Singletary, who was drafted by the Buffalo Bills following a 1,348-yard season last season.
Next time out: Florida Atlantic is in Ohio to take on No. 5 Ohio State in Columbus at 12 p.m., Aug. 31.
Florida A&M Rattlers (0-1, 0-0 MEAC)
Last time out: The Rattlers were pasted, 62-0 by No. 17 Central Florida.
Outlook: I left Florida A&M out inadvertently last week (my apologies to Rattler fans). However, Thursday’s season-opener was ugly. Nothing went right for the Rattlers. They managed a paltry 4 yards of rushing offense with Xavier Smith getting 10 yards on 1 carry to lead the team. The passing wasn’t a lot better as Ryan Stanley and Rasean McKay combined to go 14-for-36 for 92 yards and zero touchdowns.
Next time out: Florida A&M gets a week off next week before hosting Fort Valley State at 6 p.m., Sept. 14 in Tallahassee.
