Florida football: Inside the numbers of Gators’ win over Miami
Not to put too fine a point on the win, but there are several numbers from Saturday’s win for the No. 8 Florida football team that are worth looking at.
A lot of those in Gator Nation are stat geeks. I am certainly one of them, especially when it comes to Florida football.
Now that we’ve had a few days to digest (or, in some cases, actually lament) the Gators’ 24-20 win over Miami Saturday, there are some numbers that might be worth taking a second look at.
These range from individual numbers to overall team statistics.
Like these:
5
Jeawon Taylor had a monster night for the Florida defense. He had five solo tackles on the night, an assist and one tackle for loss.
5
This is also the number of those with at least six tackles on defense for Florida football. Taylor, Kyree Campbell, Ventrell Miller, Jonathan Greenard and Jabari Zuniga.
74-54
Just to compare active defenses, Florida football racked up 74 tackles while the Hurricanes had 54.
2
The number of Miami defenders with at least six total tackles on defense. Quite a comparison.
4-of-4
The fourth-down conversion for Florida football. Consequently, the Gators were just 2-of-10 on third-down conversions.
23:47
The total time of possession for the Gators Saturday night. This compares to 36:13 for the Hurricanes. It’s not necessarily how much time you have, but what you do with it that counts.
151.6
The passer rating for Florida football quarterback Feleipe Franks. Franks was 17-of-27 for 254 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Not bad, but it is a bit overshadowed by some questionable decision-making.
0
The number of rushers on either side to amass 100 yards on the ground or more. Miami running back Deejay Dallas had 100 yards on the ground, but lost five yards, for a net of 95 yards.
225
The number of combined penalty yards for both teams. Miami racked up 125 yards on 14 penalties while the Gators had nine penalties for 100 yards. Of course, the penalties on Florida resulted in five of Miami’s 20 first downs.
There are a lot more to go into, but this is a good start for the first game of the season. The Gators now have the week off before hosting Tennessee-Martin on Sept. 7 in Gainesville.
