On Saturday, August 24, a battle will take place. This will be one of the best match up’s the entire Florida football season. Miami’s receivers VS DBU.

Miami coach Manny Diaz named Jarren Williams as the starting quarterback and he has plenty of talent to throw to. But is he ready for a game of this magnitude?

Miami’s receiver corps

If there is one position that Miami can boast about over all others, it is their receivers. They have depth and talent that any team would admire.

The likely starters at wide receiver will be K.J. Osborn and Jeff Thomas. Osborn is a transfer from Buffalo where he showed he had mega talent. The question on him, will he be able to be the same force in a power five conference.

He is a fast wideout that knows how to run a route which will make him a big target for the freshman quarterback. When in trouble the quarterback can look for Osborn to be right in a seem to bail him out.

On the other side, you will likely see Jeff Thomas. Thomas is one of the best WR in the country. He is fast, fast, fast and despite being let go last season late in the year, he still led the team in receiving yards.

Osborn and Thomas will be the best set of receivers the Gators will see all year. In addition to those two, they have several top-notch WR’s behind them.

Brian Hightower would most likely be that third guy in the rotation but with guys like Dee Wiggins and Mark Pope it will be a battle. Together with Highly touted freshman Jeremiah Payton and 6-foot-6 wideout Evidence Njoku, it will take all the Gators have to stop them.

Florida’s answer

The Canes wide receivers will be matched up against a defensive backfield that has been hit with injuries.

With CJ McWilliams out for the season, Marco Wilson will be the man. He is the most experienced and most equipped to handle the Miami’s receivers.

In addition to Marco, it will be up to the likes of sophomore Trey Dean III and a list of freshman cornerbacks.

Dean was forced into action last season after an injury and performed rather well. He can handle the pressure and will prove to be a great cornerback. However, the rest of the defensive backs will be pushed to get up to speed and contribute fast.

Depth is surely a problem right now and having a list of freshman you must count on is not ideal.

Except these are Gator freshman DB’s, that means they are among the best at what they do. This will be a great game to be tested as they will not see the likes of this receiving core again this year.

One thing Florida football has always had and that is great defensive back play. This year will be no different.
