On Monday, two days after a fall scrimmage, Miami Hurricanes’ head coach Manny Diaz announced the starter for the season opener against Florida football Aug. 24.

Well, now we know.

We are a little surprised, but at least we know now.

On Monday, following a Saturday scrimmage, Miami Hurricanes’ head football coach Manny Diaz announced who the Hurricanes will start Aug. 24 in the season opener with Florida.

And, it isn’t who you might think.

Diaz said redshirt freshman Jarren Williams has won the starting job over Ohio State transfer Tate Martell and fellow redshirt sophomore N’Kosi Perry — who actually played for the Hurricanes last season.

The announcement came eight months after Williams nearly transferred out of Miami.

"“All three guys showed tremendous improvement and development, which is a credit to their hard work and the work of Dan Enos and his offensive staff,” Diaz said, in a statement. “We believe we can win with all three guys, however, we feel like Jarren has the greatest upside due to his passing ability, his instincts and his determination.“As we move into preparation for the Florida game we will continue the competition to determine who will serve as the backup quarterback.”"

It’s the first big decision for Diaz as a new head coach and Enos as a new offensive coordinator at Coral Gables.

Reportedly, it came down to Saturday’s scrimmage to get the coaching staff to decide on Williams for the starting role.

Now, Williams will get his first taste of college football when the Hurricanes take on Florida football Aug. 24 in Orlando.

“You’ve got one shot and when I get my shot, I’m going to be prepared for it,” Williams said. “When I get the opportunity, I am going to make sure I do what I do.”

Williams, from Lawrenceville, Georgia, made one appearance last season for Miami — earning time against Savannah State. he had a 1-yard touchdown run following going 1-for-3 passing for 17 yards.

Should be interesting to see how someone who many considered to third on the depth chart, handles the Florida football defense.
