Florida football: Watch: Dan Mullen wants progress with O-line, quarterback
Florida football coach Dan Mullen held a media conference Thursday to discuss the state of the Gators leading into the 2019 fall camp.
Okay, before it dominates the conversation, it does appear Florida football coach Dan Mullen walked into a glass door as he held a media conference today in Gainesville.
I won’t mention the band-aid … whoops, I just did.
Regardless, Mullen along with defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and co-offensive coordinator John Hevesy addressed members of the media Thursday, ahead of the open of fall camp.
In the hour-and-a-half conference, Mullen addressed, first, where he wanted to see the most progress this season.
"“Obviously, the offensive line is a big one where you want to see progress,” Mullen said. “Quarterback. To me, that’s always the biggest one.”"
The Gators return redshirt junior Feleipe Franks under center, but he will have a relatively inexperienced offensive line in front of him.
Mullen said he expects to see evidence that Franks and other quarterbacks have put in work over the summer months to get better.
He also got into transfers to a degree, saying the transfer portal is “a much more common thing” and, to coaches, “I think it changes how you view transfers.”
Mullen did say one of the things that excites him about this season is the depth on the team, especially in the receiving corps.
And why not with the likes of Van Jefferson (503 yards receiving last season), Josh Hammond (4 receiving touchdowns), Trevon Grimes and Freddie Swain back?
"“When you have depth and the confidence in that group … you can let the defense dictate who gets the ball,” Mullen said. “We don’t have to force-feed the ball to certain people. We can let the quarterback go through his reads and take what the defense gives because we are pretty confident in all of them.”"
Grantham discussed the state of the defense and said he “liked the attitude of our team as a whole” especially with players like Kyree Campbell, David Reece and Jonathan Greenard coming back on the defensive side of the ball.
