Florida football: Spurrier still making headlines at SEC Media Days
By Nick Knudsen
Even though he has been out of the game for a minute, former Florida football head coach Steve Spurrier is still the topic of conversation, even at SEC Media Days.
Mullen’s hole-in-one
Florida football head coach Dan Mullen wasn’t shy when it came to sharing about his first hole-in-one.
“There was a back-right pin placement on the green, all water along the right side, so had to play it left,” Mullen stated, “Shooting down to the green, it was about 173 [yards]. Seven iron and I hit it flush, ya know, I just crushed it.
“Caught it about six feet away from the pin and it hit, one bounce with a little roll down toward…ya know, played the green,” Mullen mimic the path of the ball on the green with his hands, “Got to see it drop in. My son and I came running out of the cart, and chest bumped each other. It was crazy!
“We rode down and videoed it to see the ball in the hole. It was a lot of fun and pretty cool.”
Mullen capped the story off by noting his improvement on Par 3s since the hole-in-one now that the pressure to get a hole-in-one has been lifted.
Spurrier adds to his legend
Mullen later shared the tale of his first hole-in-one with the Florida football legend Steve Spurrier.
Spurrier, who once clinched a Heisman Trophy after insisting he be allowed to kick a winning 40-yard field goal against Auburn, might be the last person you would want to call to gloat over a recent athletic feat.
After Mullen told Spurrier about his hole-in-one, Spurrier replied with, “I’ve had six of ’em.”
Mullen didn’t need an ace to recall that, in Gainesville, Spurrier is king, but in case he ever needs another reminder, I’m sure Spurrier would happily oblige.
