It’s a great weekend for college sports in Gainesville. Followers of Gator sports know that the football team faces a key test this Saturday night in The Swamp against Louisiana State University. But the Gators have big matchups in volleyball, soccer and swimming & diving. Here’s what Gators sports fans can check out this weekend:
Two SEC Matches for top-10 Gator volleyball team this weekend
The powerhouse Gator volleyball team is marching up the polls and getting prepared for a busy weekend with two SEC foes. At 10-3, the Gators are ranked 9th in the coaches poll and 10th by the NCAA rankings, and with a 4-0 conference record, they join Kentucky as the only team undefeated in SEC play.
The Gators will get one of their toughest conference tests yet, when No. 19 Texas A&M comes to the O’Connell Center for a 2 pm Sunday match. Before that, Coach Mary Wise hopes to continue the Gators dominance over interstate rival Georgia in a 7 pm Friday match.
The Aggies have beaten ranked competition this season, including then No. 6 USC and No. 13 San Diego, whom the Gators also defeated in an early season tournament. The Gators have faced some other top competition this year, including losses to top-5 teams Florida State University (dang it!) and Texas.
The Gators are looking to add another SEC championship to the trophy case, having won it 20 times, including a streak of 18 straight that ended in 2008.
Gators Soccer Will Wear Pink in Friday Home Match
Soccer fans will have an opportunity to cheer on the No. 5 ranked Gators at 7 pm on Friday as they host Mississippi State at James G. Pressly Stadium. The Gators jumped up a spot in the polls after winning 3-1 at Arkansas last weekend. Florida is 10-2 and a perfect 5-0 in conference play, while the Bulldogs are 3-9 and have a winless conference record. There is no charge to see the game.
Show your support for breast cancer awareness and join the Gators in wearing pink at the game. Soccer fans can also get autographs from the players, who will be available to meet fans in the concourse after the game. It’s a good opportunity for fans to congratulate Tessa Andujar and Savannah Jordan, who respectively won SEC Defensive and Offensive Player of the Week. It’s Jordan’s second consecutive week taking the award.
Swimming & Diving Splashes Off Against LSU
If one matchup with LSU isn’t enough for you, check out both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams as they host the Tigers at the Stephen O’Connell Center Natatorium on Friday. Diving starts at 3 pm and the swimming events get going at 4 pm. The Gators have never lost a head-to-head matchup with LSU.
Cross Country on ESPN3
Lastly, good luck to the men’s cross country team as they travel to Orlando on Saturday for the Disney Cross Country Classic, which can be seen on ESPN 3 at 7:30 am, for you early birds out there.
